Morty is an Esper who was submissive, in more ways than one (unfortunately)[1], to Vonesperda and her plans and involvement in the Eddstadt conspiracy, acting as one of its main perpetrators. Additionally he worked as an assistant to Evyle, and additionally as an understudy in order to learn master the creation her spirit-binding contracts[2].
Vonesperda does not mourn the loss of Morty when he gets captured, saying that while it is a shame to lose him, there are plenty of weak-willed espers within the world.[3]
